Home Brew Club The Palm Beach Draughtsmen
The Palm Beach Draughtsmen,a local home brew craft beer club, has their annual competition on April 19th & 20th. Home brewing is growing like crazy and the number of entries received this year beats last year’s by 40%. Long story short, we have a ton of beer to judge and could use some help. We will be pre-judging this Saturday from 10am till 4pm. If you’d like to see first-hand how beer is judged and try some great (and possibly some not so great) beers let me know and I’ll get you directions. It’s at a big house in the acreage, but it’s just off of Okeechobee Blvd, just as you leave Royal Palm Beach. Feels like you’re in the middle of nowhere, but civilization is minutes away.
They can certainly use people who want to Steward. Basically, you sit with two judges at a table, pour their beers (you can sample with them as well), keep their paperwork organized and double-check their math. It’s a neat way to experience different beer styles, or compare several examples of the same style back to back.

The Palm Beach Draughtsmen’s 18th annual Hurricane Blowoff, always an AHA/BJCP certified homebrew, mead and cider competition, will come ashore in suburban West Palm Beach @ El Encanto during the weekend of April 19th – 20th. The entry window will open on March 11th and close at 5pm on March 29th. Pre-Judging will be on the 5th-7th, with some additional pre-judging on the 12th-13th, if needed. Judging will commence on Friday the 19th @ 2pm – ?? and judging on Saturday will run from 9am – ?? followed by the Best of Show. The awards dinner (great food and homebrew!), party and excellent raffle will follow the BOS, starting @ 7pm at El Encanto . If you would like to judge or steward, please indicate that on the on-line entry form below. Even if you have never participated in a homebrew competition, this is a great opportunity to learn more about the 28 categories of beer, mead and cider, so we encourage you to join us!!
Rules and Other Info
Eligibility: The Hurricane Blowoff Competition is open to all home brewers. No commercial entries or entries brewed at a commercial establishment will be accepted.
How to Enter: Each entry will consist of three (3), 10 to 16 ounce (beer) or 6 to 16 ounce (meads and ciders) bottles, which must be brown or green colored glass only. All bottles must be free of ink name-brand lettering, and paper labels. Raised “NO DEPOSIT”, or manufacturing codes are acceptable, as are Sam Adams-style bottles which contain minimal raised glass. Bottle caps must be blacked out to eliminate any identifying markings or graphics. Grolsch-type or swing top bottles are not eligible. Bottles not meeting these requirements may be disqualified. You may submit as many entries as you’d like, but no more than two for each sub-category will be allowed. If you have any questions about bottle eligibility, please contact Joe Peters at : JPeters@eahec.org.
Entries will be accepted starting on March 11th and must be received by 5pm on Friday, March 29th. The entry fee is $6 per entry. Please make checks payable to Palm Beach Draughtsmen, Inc. (do not send cash). A completed entry form must accompany every entry. Entry fees can be paid through the link below, or can be submitted with a hard copy of the entry form. Attach a completed bottle ID form to each bottle with a rubber band only. Glued or taped ID forms will not be accepted and those entries will be disqualified.
Categories: All 2008 BJCP beer, mead and cider categories (28 total) and associated sub-categories will be accepted in this competition. Each entrant is responsible for placing his or her entries in the proper category-we are not mind readers (though we wish we were!). Be sure to select the correct category number and sub-category letter on your entry and bottle ID forms. All entries will be judged according to your information and classifications listed on your forms and failure to supply a fully completed entry form may result in the entry being judged in the wrong category/subcategory. The Palm Beach Draughtsmen reserve the right to combine categories depending on number of entries. Visit the BJCP @ www.bjcp.org, for a copy of the current Style Guidelines and for additional style information. First, Second, and Third place medals will be awarded for each category. A Best of Show award will be presented for beer and mead/ciders and the highly sought-after Cat 5 award will be presented to the brewer with the highest overall point total!
